First-
our 16XL is a true 16’6”
centerline. We’re not
trying to sell you a 16
ft. boat that is really 15’4”
etc. Bigger, wider is
better.
Our 16XL can handle really
big water or carrying
heavy loads. Because of
the design and width of
our boats, they are really
dry boats and are very
stable and easy to row.
They have been thru some
major big water and came
thru with flying colors.
Our boat hulls are made
with cross woven
fiberglass cloth, mat, and
heavy roving cloth along
with a super tough layer
of nytex (tri- axle weave
fiberglass) down by hand
with resin. With our
attention to detail we
build a stronger lighter
boat with uniform
thickness without resin
build up throughout. You
can make a good boat with
a gun but most boat
builders use a thick build
up of chop mat to try to
get strength. If the
builder doesn’t pay
attention to detail you
get thick/thin parts.
Air/water pockets (blows)
etc. this all comes back
and bites you later. The
beauty of fiberglass is
that it can be repaired
fairly easy and be just as
strong as new should the
need for a repair come up.
Besides being warm to fish
out of in the winter, its
ability to slide over
rocks and ease of rowing
make it the choice of
experienced fisherman.
We take our parts and
double fiberglass them to
the raw hull for a better
bond. We even build in a
transom motor mount which
comes standard in all of
our boats. Then we gel
coat and web the insides
to make for a clean and
durable interior.
The boat layout as you
know is super important.
This is where you tell me
what you would really like
to see in your boat and I
try my best to get it
done. You can go with a no
frills/basic boat, as our
two seat version or to one
with all the options, like
our deluxe fly fishing
model. Some customers want
a complete package –
trailer, oars etc. while
some just want the boat
and provide their own
basics like seats,
anchors, trailer, oars
etc. the hull is the same
no matter what you order
for the interior and it
comes with our life time
bottom warranty. In our
interior the front knee
brace and location allows
the caster to fish right
in front of the bow. The
front caster position puts
him up and over so he can
fish three feet in front
of him, without the rower
having a hard time seeing
ahead. Even the angle of
the deck helps fly
fisherman maintain line
speed and there are no
objects to catch the fly
line. Our raised floor up
front and in the back
makes for comfortable
standing and casting. The
wide design of the bottom
with the help of our
advance designed tracking
chines allows the boat to
float and row back up
water that you never
thought possible. You can
have your boat with a two
bench model or with a
rowers pedestal with a
sliding rower’s seat.
The pedestal is very
popular as it makes it
very easy to walk around
inside the boat to land
fish or help your
passengers. Our raised oar
locks keep you from
hitting your knees and are
great while stand up
rowing or feathering down
open water.
Our standard side storage
is large enough to carry
over night baggage and you
able to get access thru
the hatch cover and there
is up-front storage
available in a box under
the front bench if you
require. I designed the
side panels to make it
easy for people to get in
and out which really makes
it safe to move around in.
I even can install
built-in tackle boxes
which really work great
and keep you from tripping
over things.
The side anchor system is
standard – mainly
because of frozen ropes,
tripping over the floor
release etc. the floor
release type we can do,
but they just don’t pull
as easy, especially when
they are cold. Your
choice.
The tracking chines really
work. We put extra heavy
roving/glass and nytex
along the chines so they
can take the beating. I
went with a longer stern
as this allows a person in
the back to have more
surface on the water there
for a higher float. This
keeps you from getting
pushed around when your
anchored or carrying a
rear fly caster. The
bottom under the passenger
in convex by ¾’in the
middle. This allows the
boat to get lift going
back up stream which in
turn push the water
through the tracking
chines. You will really
like the way this boat
rows and the way
fiberglass slides over
rocks in low water make
them the choice in low
water conditions.
Colors. I like using light
colors for the hull.
White, beige, lt. grey
etc. with like webbing
colors inside or you
decide. Customers tell me
they like our logo on the
sides and the blue waves
make for a clean look. We
now offer custom vinyl
designs – you will love
the look and be able to
advertise your guide
service or business if you
like.
Hope some of this
information helps and I
wish you the very best.
Call if I can help in any
way and would love to hear
your comments.

With
the success of our 10ft
pram, we found customers
that wanted a little
bigger skiff or pram so
they can take one or two
other fisherman. We also
had some big sized
fisherman that would be
pushing the pram to its
limits so the 13 skiff was
designed to fit that bill.
This boat really is an
awesome rowing and
performing craft. It
tracks great and is very
stable for those big guys
to stand up in and sight
fish in lakes etc. With
the optional electric
motor bracket, it makes a
super boat for trolling or
side drifting the rivers.
I have had this boat thru
some major big water and
it performed great.
The “dog deck” with
built in knee brace can
also act as a seat or a
place to store items
underneath. The boat can
come with two benches or a
rowers pedestal and a
passenger bench – your
choice.
This is truly a great boat
for those who don’t want
the weight and size of a
full size drift boat but
they still get just about
the same interior space.
This is the same square
ender style that was used
to run the rouge river in
the 50’s and is now
coming back in style
because of its usefulness.

This
boat works great in rivers
and streams and it’s
safe to stand up and fly
fish in lakes and bays. A
very easy, quick
responding boat to row.
High floating so it turns
quickly and is able to get
to the places and pockets
the bigger boats just can’t
go. It is the perfect one
man boat but two adults
can fish out of it and
because it is light weight
(110 lbs. approx.) the
hull can be carried or
lifted over any
obstructions. It comes
standard with raised oar
locks for easy handling
and that gives you the
availability to standup
and feather the boat down
the river when looking for
fish.
An optional electric motor
bracket can be added so
you can troll the lakes or
crab the bays. For those
who want a knee brace to
standup and sight fish it
is available and fits
across the gunnels. Most
of our single fly
fisherman want this
option.
The boat fits in the back
of a standard size pick-up
or some people even car
top it. Put a couple of
4X4 in the bed of your
smaller import truck and
that works too. Should you
prefer a trailer, it only
requires a very light
weight one and we do have
some available. This boat
is constructed from the
same high quality
fiberglass materials that
my big boats are made of
and it also comes with the
lifetime bottom puncture
for the original owner.
You will love this boat
for not only its
performance but its
usefulness. This truly is
a “do all” boat. 10ft.

Sawyer
Paddle & Oars was
founded in 1967 by Ralph
Sawyer in Rogue River,
Oregon. A prodigious
marathon canoe competitor,
Sawyer founded the company
on the premise that the
best way to make paddles
is to stay within the
guidelines of offering a
well designed, well
priced, high quality
paddle that was incredibly
durable. Utilizing thin
laminates of woods,
salvaged from local saw
mills in the Rogue Valley,
Ralph would add incredible
strength with layered
fiberglass and resin
reinforcement. Sawyers
early paddle designs
quickly became recognized
for their good designs and
tough, light weight,
functional beauty.
The developing local white
water rafting industry
prompted the growth of a
line of laminated Douglas
Fir oars to meet the
particularly rough demands
of the sport. Sawyer
quality oars quickly
gained popularity for
their light weight and
ability to withstand the
tough conditions unique to
white water use. Ralph was
well known to test his
oars by jumping on them
suspended between two milk
crates to determine
whether they were up to
the task.
Twenty years from its
founding, 1987 brought
Sawyer Paddles & Oars
a new helmsman; Bruce
Bergstrom. An experienced
rafter and kayaker,
Bergstrom added new ideas
to the solid legacy left
by Ralph Sawyer. Expanding
the line and reaching new
customers with new models
and designs, Bruce soon
found the company
outgrowing its shops on
the banks of the Rogue
River. In1991 Sawyer
Paddles & Oars moved
up the Rogue Valley to its
current larger and better
equipped facility just off
Interstate 5 in Talent,
Oregon, at the base of the
Siskiyou mountain range.
In 1991, Sawyer was also
allowed the opportunity to
take over production of
Smoker Oar and Paddles™.
This was done in an effort
to keep the Smoker Brand™
and their solid Ash oars
available to the growing
white water industry. The
Smoker Oar and Paddle
Brand™ dates back to
when some time in the 1930’s
the Smoker family switched
from being wagon wheel
manufacturers to making
paddles and oars. During
the 1940’s and 1950’s,
they were one of the major
oar and paddle producers
in the world,… then
motors came along,… they
started making boats.
Today they are a Major
builder of aluminum and
fiberglass boats under
several brand names
besides the historic
Smoker Craft Boats Brand™.
Thankfully the solid ash
Smoker Oar legacy
continues, and the decades
of production knowledge
plus the very specialized
oar and paddle making
machinery required to make
them has not been lost in
the merger of Sawyer and
Smoker.
Sawyer now manufactures a
full line of composite and
wood/composite Hybrid
oars, these being arguably
“lighter and stronger”
than their wood
predecessors. These new
lightweight fiberglass and
graphite composites
quickly gained market
share as they are more
easily transportable (UPS
able) and have a perceived
weight and durability
advantage over traditional
wood oars. Sawyer’s
original Hybrid Oar™
quickly became a sought
after combination of wood
and composites, and with
Sawyer’s optional
Counter Balancing system
was arguably the lightest
rowing most durable white
water oar available. The
latest MX series of oar
shafts (Multi-aXial
reinforced composites of
Fiberglass and Graphite),
along with an expanding
choice of Blades, carry on
the tradition of Sawyer
supporting professional
and private boaters world
wide. Sawyer/Smoker oars
and accompanying factory
support have shown
themselves to be simply
the best available, as
proven by the trust of
thousands of satisfied and
renewing customers,
recreational and
commercial, world wide.
Sawyer Paddles have
continue to evolve from
their original roots of
the legendary Sawyer
Special and Sawyer Cruiser
(still available). Sawyer
now makes and maintains a
full line of paddles for
Canoeing and Kayaking,
Flat Water and White
Water, Modern and
Traditional, Outrigger and
Dragon Boat. Sawyer is
continuing to set new
standards of performance
and beauty with our
Western Red Cedar Paddles,
Dynel™ Tough Edges™,
Pro Tips™, Ergonomically
Adjusted Bent Shafts and
grip as well as ultra
light (14 oz) paddle
hybrids, all with the
beauty and performance
advantages only Sawyer
wood can offer.
